George was coxswain from 1938-1942 of the RNLI boat 'Abdy Beauclerk' at Aldeburgh and was awarded a bronze medal 'for his outstanding seamanship and great courage' (The story of the Aldeburgh Lifeboat).

1938 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Coxswain George Chatten for the rescue of four people from the barges Grecian and Astrild in November.
